Super! About the only times I have to fire up M$-Office for are spreadsheets using more advanced functions and M$-Weird docs using the new (2007 & 2010) formats. And, of course, for all Access .mdbs and anything in Publisher, I really doubt there will be much change in what LibO will do with those, however. I love LibO nevertheless! (This is my second time writing this, but must have pushed something other than 'Post' 1st time around.)

LibreOffice stats: 400 total contributors, thousands of code commits every month

The Document Foundation (TDF), which launched in 2010 to develop LibreOffice, has published statistics that illustrate the project's rapid growth. Approximately 400 total developers have contributed code to the project. The number of contributors who are active each month generally ranges from 50 to over 100.

The statistics released today show that the LibreOffice community is healthy and diverse. Red Hat and SUSE each account for a large chunk of development, but the volunteers collectively have a higher volume of commits than any of the corporate contributors. The total number of monthly commits tends to range from 1500-3000.

LibreOffice 3.5 released, introduces new grammar tool

One of the major new features introduced in LibreOffice 3.5 is a new grammar checking tool. The feature is built with Lightproof, a language-neutral grammatical analysis tool that is implemented in Python and has a sophisticated regex-based rule system. LibreOffice Writer also got a typographical boost in 3.5 from improvements to the Linux Libertine font, which now supports additional features like true small caps.

Intel distributes LibreOffice, can Microsoft be pleased?

LibreOffice, the OpenOffice fork, is a very popular open-source office suite. But, while it has great support from Linux distributors, like openSUSE and Ubuntu, LibreOffice has never had a major corporate backer on the Windows side… until now. Intel is now offering LibreOffice to Windows users via its AppUp application store. I wonder how Microsoft feels about this.

Intel Joins LibreOffice

The month of February is a month to remember for the LibreOffuce project. They formally incorporated the foundation in Berlin, released 3.5 with major changes and now Intel is joining the foundation as a member. Intel will also make available the LibreOffice for Windows from SUSE in Intel AppUp center. Intel AppUp Center is an online repository designed for Intel processor-based  devices.

"I have been using LibreOffice from day one for presentations at conferences and for data analysis," said Dawn Foster, open source community lead, Intel. "Our engineers have worked with the LibreOffice codebase to optimise it for Intel hardware. Adding it to the AppUp(TM) Center is an obvious extension, and will provide an exciting feature for all Ultrabook users."

The growth of LibreOffice over Microsoft Office

LibreOffice after one and half-years as an open source office productivity suite has grown from being just a fork of OpenOffice.org (OOo) and emerged as an independent tool for those who prefer the openness and scope of work copyleft offers over claustrophobic copyright licenses and proprietary software. Following the game-changing split and backing by The Document Foundation (TDF) LibreOffice has over 25,000 code commits and 330 contributors. Secondly, it has over 15million Linux OS users, a further 10 million users are split between Microsoft (90-percent) and Mac OS X (5- percent).

LibreOffice 3.5.1 Is Now Available for Download

A few minutes ago, March 15th, The Document Foundation company proudly announced the first maintenance release of the LibreOffice 3.5 open source office suite software for Linux, Macintosh and Windows platforms.

This is mostly a bug and stability fix, but it's an important one, for alot of reasons. For people that spend the bulk of their day using LibreOffice, stability is critical. It's something that Sun/Oracle never put as much emphasis on as The Document Foundation has.

Simply put, the regular update release cadence of LibreOffice provides the highest quality open source office suite ever created.

The Document Foundation (TDF), which produces the leading open source office software suite LibreOffice, is on schedule for the release of a cloud version of its software next month.

A group of LibreOffice developers have added experimental collaborative editing capabilities to the open source office suite. The feature allows multiple users to work on the same document simultaneously over the Internet. The collaborative editing functionality was implemented by grafting Telepathy to LibreOffice.

Richard Collins from Canonical Ltd demonstrated a few days ago how easy is to open, edit and resume a LibreOffice document using Ubuntu for Android on an Android smartphone.

LibreOffice for Android Is in the Works

We've known for some time already that an Android version of LibreOffice was on the way sooner or later, and earlier this week Michael Meeks, a Linux desktop architect at SUSE who coordinates LibreOffice development work, provided an update.

Even as the software's developers work on the desktop version of LibreOffice 3.6.0, the Android version of the popular open source productivity suite is apparently coming along nicely as well, Meeks reports.
