I'm not 100% sold on KDE 4.x.  One of the reasons for switching to Linux is to get away from the bloated software syndrome.

I'll wait until they have worked some of the bugs out before testing.

The Live CD for PCLinuxOS that I give out is the 2009.1 version, not the 2009.2 current version.  The 2009.1 IMHO is a much better and more complete OS than the current version.

I looked at it last night in VirtualBox.  They changed a few programs, but by-and-large it's just an updated version of the previous release.

I'm no longer using it, but I still recommend it for beginners:

PCLinuxOS 2010 is excellent for any kind of user, but probably most recommended for new comers. It brings down the need for CLI typing to almost zero.

The Perfect Desktop - PCLinuxOS 2010 (KDE)

A good review, but I wouldn't say "perfect."

To fully replace a Windows desktop, I want the PCLinuxOS 2010 desktop to have the following software installed:

* VirtualBox - lets you run your old Windows desktop as a virtual machine under your Linux desktop, so you don't have to entirely abandon Windows

So the perfect Linux desktop "that is a full-fledged replacement for a Windows desktop..." includes Windows?  Imagine that!

I've been running the new edition in VirtualBox and I'm not impressed.

Some of the functionality in configuration utilities has been removed.  And I'm having a hard time locating other configuration settings because they have been moved.

It's still a good "starter" Linux for first time users, but I won't be going back to it any time soon.

This distro is 32-bit only.

The default configuration of PCLinuxOS is just sloppy. There is no (good) excuse for it. The community can do better than this, especially for a version designed for new users. Features that should be enabled out of the box, should. Users, especially new users, deserve a better user experience.

Agreed.  The newer version is not up to the standards set by the previous version.  Most users expect newer versions to be an improvement over the older version.  Disappointment is not a good marketing strategy.

PCLinuxOS to Get a 64-bit Version

Bill "Texstar" Reynolds, founder and lead developer of PCLinuxOS, said in a blog post today that a new 64-bit version is in the works. Details are sketchy at present, but users have been asking for this for a long time.

PCLinuxOS 2010.12 - Ahead of Schedule

A new ISO image of PCLinuxOS, 2010.12, was released at the end of last week. This is even a bit ahead of schedule, since they generally release a new installed every three months, and the last one was 2010.10.

But still no 64-bit version.

Is PCLinuxOS on the Ropes?

A labor of love is how lead developer Bill "Texstar" Reynolds once described his work on PCLinuxOS. Commonly heard phrases included "for fun" and "for my users." But a recent exclamation by Reynolds could lead one to speculate PCLOS may be on the ropes. In response to repository hosting issues of the last two weeks, Reynolds said this morning, "This distro is becoming a major pain in the ass."

I would hate to see it go.
