You can increase the functionality of Gimp by installing additional plug-ins. Browse a large list of extensions at
Gimp's official Web site
.
You can find additional information about Gimp plug-ins here.

Now GIMP developer Martin Nordholt has revealed that the 'target' release date for version 2.8 (AKA 'Single Window GIMP) is December the 27th 2010.
Single Window GIMP Coming 27th December 2010

The code refactorings and clean ups that have been made to enable single-window mode to be implemented has also resulted in improvements to multi-window mode. The most significant is the support for multi-column dock windows, as you can see used in the screenshot above. People having dockables on one screen and an image in full screen on another will probably find this useful, for example. Before this, you could only have one column of dockables inside a dock window.
Very interesting!

Five handy tools in the GIMP toolbox
Quote
For many Linux users, The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Project) seems to mostly be a tool of mystery and confusion. The biggest reason for this is lack of exposure. Most users that complain about The GIMP’s interface really only need to get to know the interface. I have covered The GIMP a few times here on Ghacks (Check out our GIMP content), but I have yet to break this application down to it’s handiest of tools. And that’s what this article will do…take some of those tools from the toolbox, the ones you should know the most, and help you to become familiar with them.

Thanks for those links, they've been duly bookmarked. I'm by no means a "power" Gimp user, but have used it to crop some photos and even done some extensive (for me, anyway) retouching on one. I've mainly used it for reducing the brightness and contrast on some pics to be used as Impress backgrounds. This helps greatly to make song lyrics more discernible, especially when the photo consisted of a lot of both highlights and lowlights.

To The Doctor,
Thanks also for the links to the Gimp tutorials. Don't know when I'll have time to study these, but at least they're on my HD and accessible at any time now.
Should my replies somehow be "grouped" with the particular post to which I'm replying? I notice they are going to the bottom of the heap. If that's the normal default, I'm sure it'll be fine.
Have a blessed day!

Great, Doctor!
I just thought maybe there was a button I hadn't found to keep it with that subject.
