Cinnamon is the new desktop environment created around the Gnome 3.2, to give power Gnome Shell users a Gnome 2 like layout and experience. It is developed and maintained by Linux Mint team. The latest release is Cinnamon1.3.

Gnome 3 has failed to win users over. Unity was so unpopular it wiped out Ubuntu’s lead on Distrowatch and made Linux Mint number one. With the dominant desktop (Gnome) and the dominant distribution (Ubuntu) both failing to set users’ hearts racing we’re reminded once again why we love using Linux – there’s so much choice.

There might even be too much choice. From Fluxbox to XFCE and KDE to MATE there are a vast and confusing selection of desktop environments to work through. Whilst some have looked to move to a lightweight option like XFCE that captures much of the flavour of Linux past with some funky new features (the nice see-through dock at the bottom of the screen on Xubuntu looks really sharp for example) others are looking to the future. In Cinnamon we have a very exciting, beautiful future that you’ll soon be recommending to everyone who’ll listen.

Introduction To The Linux Mint Cinnamon Desktop

As one of the GNOME users who's still fond of the old-school GNOME desktop, the recent release of Cinnamon 1.3.1 caught my eye. While it's not exactly GNOME 2.x, it's close enough that most users with a fondness for the 2.x days will feel right at home.

How to install Cinnamon in Sabayon 8

I think I have lost count of how many Cinnamon-related tutorials I have published in the last two weeks. If nothing else, it goes to show what I think of the new desktop environment, which is a fork of the GNOME 3 shell. The latest version is Cinnamon 1.3.1, but if you are running Sabayon 8 (GNOME), the binary version available for installation is Cinnamon 1.2.0.

The GNOME 2 Zombie

In the past year, the GNOME 2 release series has become the zombie of the free desktop.

Although replaced by GNOME 3, it refuses to die. Its mourners flock to Xfce, in which they see a resemblance of the deceased. It lives an undead existence in a crippled version in the current GNOME's fallback mode.

More recently, Linux Mint has taken on Dr. Frankenstein's role, trying to revive GNOME 2 in MATE, and reincarnate it as Cinnamon.

I've been using CDE on Mint 12 in VB and found a weird bug.  Every time I try to take a full desktop screen shot all I get is the wallpaper and mouse pointer.  Nothing else on the desktop is captured in the image.

I've tried the default screen shot program and KSnapshot with the same end results.

Cinnamon 1.4 Released With New Hot Corner Behavior, More

Cinnamon 1.4 has been released today and the major change in this release is a new hot corner behavior which can now use either workspace selection (like Compiz "Expo") or window selection (like Compiz "Scale"). In expo mode, you can add or remove workspaces and when you hover a workspace, the windows are arranged like in the overview so you can see all available windows (which you can drag onto another workspace, etc.). Also, the hot corner position can now be changed.

Other changes in Cinnamon 1.4:

    * Panel edit mode
    * A new Cinnamon Settings panel applet which lets you restart Cinnamon, start Looking Glass, restore all settings to default, quickly access panel settings, and so on
    * Option to only use workspaces on primary monitor
    * Cinnamon menu editor (forked from alacarte)
    * Improved support for RTL languages
    * Added 'Visible on all workspaces' and "Move to workspace" to the window list
    * Favourites improvements (you can add an application to the favourites by drag and drop, etc.)
    * Many bug fixes

I'm hoping they get the bugs worked out.  IMHO - this is the best replacement for Gnome 2.x I've seen so far.

Review: Cinnamon 1.4

If I had to choose today, I would pick MATE over Cinnamon, because although Cinnamon has certainly come a long way from MGSE, there is still a good deal of work to be done. But I have confidence that Cinnamon will continually improve, and I am holding out hope that it will be good enough for me to use exactly as I want it by the time Linux Mint 13 LTS "M[...]a" is released. In any case, I will be keeping my eye on Cinnamon for a while.

Anyone know if you can install Cinnamon on Linux Mint 11? If so, how?

I added the PPA, but I keep getting "Failed to fetch" messages when I update apt.
