Yeah, they do seem to be moving in the direction of greater obscurity.

Canonical Announces Extended Support for LTS Releases for Desktop Users
Quote
A day after the world’s most popular desktop Linux distro turned seven, Canonical announced a new support policy for its LTS (long-term support) releases, which are released every two years. Beginning with the release of Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) in April, 2012, Canonical will support LTS releases for desktops users for five years instead of the current three years.
Sweet! Bonus!

Users Want a Better Unity in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Quote
For Ubuntu 12.04 LTS the developers will make the Unity interface better, including lots of features and improvements. Among them, we can mention that Lenses could be added to the Launcher, Shotwell photo importing support from the Launcher, and new quick-lists.
Moreover, it appears that there's no place for applications that don't support indicator-applets and are available in the Ubuntu Software Center. These apps should be removed/banned until they get support for the new Unity notification area.

Expect Longer Battery Life with Ubuntu Linux 12.04 'Precise Pangolin'
Quote
Not only is there a Linux kernel patch on the way that promises to fix the power regression problems that have been plaguing the open source software over the past year or so, but now it looks like the next version of Ubuntu Linux--version 12.04 LTS, or “Precise Pangolin”--will be delivering some big improvements of its own in that area as well.
Advantage: Linux!

Ubuntu 12.04 Adds Launcher Customization
Quote
I started using Ubuntu 12.04 on my main PC a couple of days ago to keep an eye on the upcoming changes and today I noticed two major changes silently added to the 'User Interface' settings option. One of my grips with Unity was the lack of any customization of Launcher's size and position. I also wanted the launcher to stay visible all the time so that I don't have to wait for it to appear.

Canonical Adds Unity Settings in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Quote
After the ability to access Unity's Lens directly from the "Ubuntu Button," the new "Show Desktop" button, and the replacement of the Application Menu with the HUD (Head-Up Display) feature, users will now be able to quickly and easily set the Unity Launcher's icon size, to enable or disable the auto-hide function of the Unity Launcher and set the releal spot to left side or in the top left corner.
These new Unity settings were implemented in the "User Interface" entry (also accessible via Change Desktop Background if you right click on the desktop) in the System Settings tool for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin), along with the ability to restore Unity to the default settings. Click the image above for more details!
